What is Goat Weed?
Scientifically known as tribulus terrestris, goat weed is a flowering plant that is native to warm temperate and tropical regions like southern Europe, Africa, and northern Australia. It can sometimes even survive in poor soils and desert climates.
Goat weed has many other common names that are used for it, as well. It is also known as Common Dubbltjie, Maltese Cross, Mexican Sandbur, Caltop, Yellow Vine, Blindy Eye, Devil’s Thorn, Automobile-Weed, Goathead, Puncture Vine, Bindii, Bullhead, Burra, Cat’s Head, and Ground Bur-Nut, among many other names.
The plant is a perennial that grows as a summer annual in colder climates. It blooms lemon-yellow flower petals. A week after it has bloomed, a fruit appears that easily falls apart into four or five single-seeded nutlets. The seeds are hard and resemble goats’ or bulls’ heads – hence some of the common names for the plant. The nutlets are sharp enough to puncture a bicycle’s tires and cause injury to bare feet.
In many parts of the United States it is considered an invasive species. Many farmers in the country have had trouble eradicating the plant. There have been many biological and herbicidal solutions to the problem, but none of them have provided quick long lasting results.
Methods of eradication have included manual removal using a hoe to cut the plant off at its taproot. But this is only convenient for small areas of growth of the plant and requires a continual monitoring of the plant throughout multiple seasons.
Another form of removal has been the use of chemical control. Unfortunately, there are few pre-emergent herbicides that have been effective.
Biological removal of the plant is typically by the use of releasing weevils to the plant area. Microlarinus lareynii and M. lypriformis are the two weevils are that used and were first introduced to farmers with this problem in 1961. Although this method is temporarily effective, the weevils do not survive for very long.
In southern Africa, the seeds of the plants are known to be homicidal weapons. Murderers smear them with the poisonous juice of another dangerous plant and place the mixture where victims are likely to walk.
Recently the plant is being promoted as a sexual enhancer. It is said to be a booster for the purpose of increasing sex drive. This purpose originated in Eastern Europe in the 1970s. Studies of the plant have shown that the plant increases hormone levels.
The plant has other effects on the body, too. It has been used in tonics in Indian ayurveda practices. Studies have shown that it increases testosterone, which helps in muscle-building and raising fertility and libido. It also has a positive effect on bone marrow activity and red blood cell production for the immune system.
Not many adverse effects have been reported from the use of the plant in medicines. Some users have reported an upset stomach after its use, which is usually counteracted by taking the substance with food.
