Citrine - the Golden Gem
The Citrine Gemstone is an exquisite semi-precious gemstone and is the birthstone for November. It is often considered to be one of the most valuable forms of quartz. Jewelry designers use citrine in their fashion jewelry designs often. In fact, many times, citrine is used as a substitute for topaz. It is also a popular and economical alternative to the much more expensive yellow sapphire or yellow diamond. Citrine is available in a wide range of colors including yellow to gold to orange brown shades of transparent quartz. Sunny and affordable, citrine can brighten almost any jewelry style, blending especially well with the shimmering white of sterling silver or white gold. The golden yellow color of citrine and heat-treated honey citrine are quite popular with jewelry designers today, and exquisite silver pendants and other fashion jewelry can be purchased online and in stores throughout the US.
The name citrine is derived from the French word citron - lemon. Citrine was used by Roman people for intaglio and cabochon during primary centuries after Christ. Citrine was also mentioned with respect to Israel tribe Naphtali. Brazil is the world's leading producer of natural Citrine with the majority of it's production coming from the state of Rio Grande do Sul.
The chemical composition of citrine is silicon dioxide. The crystals formed follow a hexagonal structure which commonly shows as clusters of pyramids based on a geode. They could also come in short, terminated crystals either singly or in aggregates. Natural citrines are typically formed when intense heat is applied to amethyst. This can happen in nature when deposits of amethyst are near a heat source in the earth's crust. In many amethyst deposits, the amethyst has been partially or fully changed to a darker brown citrine due to naturally occurring high temperatures, thereby changing the amethyst into natural citrine. Citrine has a hardness of 7 on the Moh's scale.
Citrine is said to symbolize aid digestion, happiness, and can be useful to treat depression and diabetes. It is also believed that the stone will protect the wearer from negativity. It is also supposed to bring about prosperity and hope. It is also supposed to aid in correcting stomach problems as well as circulatory issues. Some people even believe that a citrine pendant is supposed to provide is protection against snake venom. Feng shui masters recommend that the citrine crystal be displayed in the south east corner of your home or office to have best results. Roman armies of old wore citrine on the chest because they believed in its life-saving properties, and their belief in its ability to cleanse, purify and eliminate poisons that build up in the body.
